For almost twenty years, Monica Mitchell Muir has helped hundreds of contractors make dollars and sense with QuickBooks by teaching them how to use this powerful software effectively and efficiently for their service business. She finds many misunderstand how job costing works in QuickBooks (including bookkeepers and accountants) and resort to numerous spreadsheets and other tools to help them. But so often, with proper setup, training, and simplifying workflow in QuickBooks, contractors save valuable time and can make better financial decisions more easily. With over 20 years of QuickBooks and small business experience, Monica is not only known for her expertise and professionalism but also her patience, sincere interest in the client’s success and practical approach to training and using QuickBooks.

While she has helped companies in a variety of industries, her specialty is contractors.  Her Spring into More Profits – the 4 Keys to Growing Your Landscape Profits and her Keys to Mastering Job Costing in QuickBooks for Better Job Profitability, are examples of group training programs she has taught, which are now downloadable products.

She has given presentations at multiple landscape and contractor conference/trade shows at the state, regional and national level shows such as PDCA, GIE, several SiteOne/John Deere Landscapes conferences, and even a day-long training for SCNLA.  Her topics center around job costing, streamlining workflow, and using QuickBooks for better business management and profitability.

Beside Monica’s newsletter and blogs, she has written for the ASA’s Contractor Compass, National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP), Landscape Management Business Planner, the Michigan Landscape Magazine, and Intuit to name a few

Monica’s unique combination of business experience, Master’s degree, QuickBooks certifications, and reseller status give her an edge over most other QuickBooks consultants. She maintains her Advanced QuickBooks ProAdvisor and Enterprise Solutions certifications and attends conferences to keep her QuickBooks knowledge sharp and up-to-date.  As an Intuit Premier Reseller, she is able to help her clients get the products best for them at the best price.  These Intuit affiliations also give her additional resources to help better serve her clientele.  Her consultant membership in NALP keeps her in touch with many of the current issues facing landscapers.

 

Before founding Muir & Associates in 2004, Monica provided software support to the small business community of southeastern Pennsylvania. During those years of working with business software, she started learning QuickBooks – the hard way! Having experienced the learning curve herself gave her a genuine understanding for how her clients feel.  Monica later provided bookkeeping services for a local contractor in Maryland which gave her an inside view of the ups and downs of the contractor world.

Monica’s undergraduate degree is from Penn State University, and her Masters is from North Carolina State University. She also taught beginning and advanced QuickBooks at Hagerstown Community College.

Monica grew up near Longwood Gardens in southeastern Pennsylvania with a houseful of dogs and now lives in Frederick, MD with her husband George and two cats. Her hobbies include reading, puzzles, and gardening.

About George Muir, Accounting Advisor

George L Muir is an advisor for Muir & Associates who can instantly see financial strengths, weaknesses, and how to prevent potential problems in small and mid-sized businesses.
With over 40 years in various accounting roles in the health care industry including CFO and auditor, George now enjoys making recommendations to improve operations, offering guidance with budgets and financial statements, facilitating financial decisions such as lease vs. buy and refinancing analyses, and audit preparation.  Each year for the last five years, he assists the AARP with their tax preparation program and is an instructor, is one of the few reviewers, and handles the actual electronic filing of the returns.

George is a CPA and received his accounting degree from Saint Joseph University in Philadelphia, PA. When he’s not working, you might find him getting ready to volunteer for the U.S. Open Golf tournament next year or enjoying the homemade beer and wine that he makes.
