What’s New in 2011? Pt. 2

Last week I listed some of the new features for 2011.  Today, you’ll learn about some of the new features in QuickBooks Premier (not Pro) and Enterprise Solutions.

The Multi-Instance feature lets you work in 2 companies at one time – this has been a long-time request and is available in the Accountant’s Edition of Premier and all editions in Enterprise Solutions.  To open the second file (which QuickBooks will call the Secondary file), you can either double-click on QuickBooks again or just the data file. This second file will be in a different color, to help you know which file you’re in.  You do have access to all features in the second file.  Here’s a link to let you see the detail http://accountant.intuit.com/mi.

Balance Sheet by Class – This has been a request for many years. However, it comes with many limitations so before upgrading for this feature take the time to learn more about those limitations or work-arounds.  Nancy Smyth of Sunburst did an in-depth blog series on Balance Sheet by Class.  http://blog.sunburstsoftwaresolutions.com/2010/10/05/quickbooks-2011-new-balance-sheet-by-class-report-part-11/

Track inventory in multiple locations with Advanced Inventory – this is an add-on product for Enterprise, but is a one-time purchase (not monthly) and a definite improvement in the inventory.  So not only can you track quantities and values, but you can also specify locations for PO’s and invoicing. You can even assemble products using components from different locations.

If you already own Enterprise and have the Full Support Plan, then V11 automatically comes to you. If you are growing and want to learn more about Enterprise, we’ll be happy to let you see it in action and discuss how it could work for your business.

I’d love to hear what your favorite new feature is and/or if you think the new features are worth the cost of the upgrade.

  1. Nancy Smyth says:

    Hi Monica
Thanks for including a link to the write-up I did on the Balance Sheet by Class Report in QuickBooks 2011. There is a lot involved in utilizing the report, which is really to bad.

  2. You did a really nice job – I’ve passed it on to a couple accountant contacts, too. Thanks for taking the time to go through it and post!
