For almost twenty years, Monica Mitchell Muir has helped hundreds of landscapers make dollars and sense with QuickBooks by teaching them how to use QuickBooks effectively and efficiently for their landscape business. She finds many misunderstand how job costing works in QuickBooks (including bookkeepers and accountants) and resort to numerous spreadsheets and other tools to help them. But so often, with proper setup, training, and simplifying workflow in QuickBooks, contractors save valuable time and can make better financial decisions more easily. With over 20 years of QuickBooks and small business experience Monica is not only known for her expertise and professionalism but also her patience, sincere interest in the client’s success and practical approach to training and using QuickBooks.
Landscapers hold a special place for Monica. Her father was a plant wholesaler for almost 20 years and on the tour for the National Hosta Convention in Pennsylvania during the 80’s. She even spent one summer working for him – yes, she learned the botanical names! She also spent a spring working for a retail nursery, and a few years as a part-time bookkeeper for a landscaper.
She has given presentations at several state and regional conference/trade shows such as GIE, GIC, CENTS, SiteOne/John Deere Landscapes conferences, LMN Leaders Summit and even a day-long training for SCNLA. She’s also a consultant member of NALP. Her topics include job costing, streamlining workflow, and using QuickBooks for better business management and profitability.
Beside Monica’s newsletter and blogs, she has written for the Michigan Landscape Magazine, New York State’s Nursery Lines, the Landscape Management Business Planner, and Intuit.
Monica has a unique combination of business experience, Master’s degree and QuickBooks certifications giving her an edge over most other QuickBooks consultants. In addition to attending conferences to keep her QuickBooks knowledge sharp and up-to-date, she maintains her Advanced QuickBooks ProAdvisor and Enterprise Solutions certifications. As an Advanced QuickBooks Solution Provider, she is also able to help her clients get the products best for them at the best price. These Intuit affiliations also give her additional resources to help better serve her clientele.
While she has helped companies in a variety of industries, her specialty is landscapers. Her Spring into More Profits – the 4 Keys to Growing Your Landscape Profits and her Keys to Mastering Job Costing in QuickBooks for Better Job Profitability, are two examples of training programs she offers.
Before founding Muir & Associates in 2004, Monica provided software support to the small business community of southeastern Pennsylvania. During those years of working with business software, she started learning QuickBooks – the hard way! Having experienced the learning curve herself gave her a genuine understanding for how her clients feel.
Monica’s undergraduate degree is from Penn State and her Masters in Adult and Community College Education is from North Carolina State University. She also taught beginning and advanced QuickBooks at Hagerstown Community College.
Monica grew up near Longwood Gardens in southeastern Pennsylvania with a houseful of dogs and now lives in Frederick, MD with her husband George and cat. Her hobbies include reading, puzzles, and gardening – of course!
About Mary Blevins
Mary Blevins has been with Muir &Associates since 2014 assisting our clients with customer service issues and our office with sales and various administrative duties. She’s a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor for QuickBooks Desktop, Enterprise and Online with over fifteen years in office administration and bookkeeping, where she began working with QuickBooks.
Mary lives in Walkersville, MD with her husband Darin who is a welder, her cat Domino and her two adult children, both of whom work in fields relating to computer technology. She is a proud supporter of the Special Olympics and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. When she is not busy you will find her in her garden with her flowers, painting and spending valuable time with her family.
About George Muir, Accounting Advisor
George L Muir is an advisor for Muir & Associates who can instantly see financial strengths, weaknesses, and how to prevent potential problems in small and mid-sized businesses. With over 40 years in various accounting roles in the health care industry including CFO and auditor, George now enjoys making recommendations to improve operations, offering guidance with budgets and financial statements, facilitating financial decisions such as lease vs. buy and refinancing analyses, and audit preparation.
For the last ten years, he has been a volunteer for the tax program. He’s one of the instructors for the tax training, a site coordinator at a few locations, reviews and files returns. He’s also added technical coordinator to his list which includes getting laptops updated, installing software, and setting up mini-networks at the various sites
George is a CPA and received his accounting degree from Saint Joseph University in Philadelphia, PA. When he’s not working, you might find gardening or enjoying the homemade beer and wine that he makes.
